Beginning throwers start out with the lowest range javelins, as the lowest range rated javelins are more forgiving to new throwers who haven't developed great form, speed or skill yet.

As your form, speed and skill improve, move up to a higher range rated javelin, since they are stiffer and will work better with a skilled an experienced thrower.

High School Girls, College Women, Women to age 49, Men aged 60-69 throw the 600 gram javelin.

Note that most High Schools in states of NJ, ND, WA, and AL are required to throw a rubber tipped javelin.
